JOURNEYMAN EXAMINATION

A Journeyman is a plumber who may work at the trade in the employment of a Plumbing Contractor. A Journeyman must have at least 5 years experience working for a licensed Plumbing Contractor or completed a registered plumbing apprenticeship program and has passed a journeyman’s plumbing test given by the Hocking County Board of Health. A Journeyman may help supervise apprentices but may not acquire a plumbing permit.

To apply for the Journeyman exam, please complete a Journeyman Test Application and return it with the required fee. The application will be approved or denied within 10 business days. Once approved, a test date will be scheduled. If an applicant fails to appear for exam without a minimum 24-hour notice he/she must re-submit an application and fee. Minimum qualifications:

  1. 1. The State of Ohio forbids persons under the age of 18 from working in the construction field, therefore the minimum age qualification for Journeyman Plumber examination is 23 years of age.
  2. 2. Provide minimum 5 year employment with a State of Ohio Plumbing Contractor or if an applicant has attended a recognized trade school and has passed a course study of 240 hours or more, it will count for 1 year of experience toward Journeyman qualifications. Proof of course record and grade must be provided at time of registration.
  3. 3. Must be an employee and or future employee of a plumbing contractor registered with the

Hocking County Health Department.

Exams are offered by the Plumbing Inspector at the Health Department. A grade of 70% or better is required to pass the examination.

When an applicant is found cheating while taking the examination, he/she will be issued a failing grade.

Examinees that do not pass may resubmit a completed examination application with the required fee and re-take the examination on the next scheduled testing date. Upon receiving a failing grade, an applicant may request to meet with the Hocking County Plumbing Inspector to review his or her examination.
